The honeymoon ‘period is when newly wed couples take a break to share some private and intimate moments that helps establish love in relationship. This privacy in turn is believed to ease the comfort zone towards physical relationship, which is one of the primary means of bonding during the initial days of marriage. The earliest term for this in English was hony moone, which was recorded as early as 1546.’[1]

Honeymoons have progressed from 1546 to a night or two away in this country to a romantic two week holiday in paradise. But as if a wedding doesn’t cost enough, the honeymoon can take up a large part of your budget. Well, think about this no further: NJAW are very impressed with Gift My Honeymoon: Gift My Honeymoon is an online wedding and honeymoon savings fund helping you buy your perfect honeymoon.

So having your guest contribute towards your honeymoon allows you to think further afield. Last week we introduced Mandy from Cruise Holidays. However, although at NJAW we think cruises are an amazing idea, admittedly they may not be suited for everyone.

You could be a little unsure of where to go on your honeymoon but know exactly what you’re looking for, what type of activities you want (if any) and the overall mood you expect from your honeymoon. But you may be unsure which country can offer all these things you want, below is an extract from ‘The Wedding Plan Book for the Deviant Bride’ which will hopefully help you decide the best location for your honeymoon:

Do you want somewhere relaxing, blissful & exotic; sun, sea and nice foods?

Paradise, deserted beaches and complete serenity can be found on islands such as Maldives, St Lucia, Mauritius, Barbados, Jamaica, Bahamas, Thailand, Bali, Seychelles, Hawaii, Mexico, Dubai and Fiji.

The above places are great options for honeymooners. Imagine spending the day on a deserted beach, a bottle of Champagne, a picnic basket full of glorious food or a waiter at your beck and call. Dinner cruises, fantastic exotic restaurants, fine wines and fabulous food while watching the sunset. Many of these places have activities such as water-sports, sightseeing cruises and other expeditions. They offer magnificent resorts, hotels and beaches; excellent for the romantic idealist.

PLEASE NOTE: Beware of the weather. Check with your travel agent, some of the islands suffer horrendous rainfalls at certain times of the year.

Do you want culture? Do you want to see city sights?

What about sightseeing with a twist of romance? Places such as San Francisco, India, Egypt, Singapore, New York, Africa, Australia and Hong Kong are wonderful places that offer culture and amazing sights while also offering an additional romantic ingredient.

Fantastic buildings, exciting excursions and different cultures, you will find these elements in any of the above locations. There are many hotels that offer honeymooners romance; champagne, strawberries and spa baths.

These places offer exquisite restaurants that overlook the different cities, from sky high buildings to low lodge cabins. You can guarantee a range of activities from shopping, wildlife or ancient history.

Again beware of the weather. Depending on the time of year you’re getting married, will depend on whether you will need masses of sun-lotion or your woolly jumpers!

Do you want the above? But you’re worried about the costs or the flying time?

Romantic sightseeing is not only ten hours flying time away, but can be two hours or a ferry trip away. Stick to Europe; Italy, France, Venice, Portugal or Morocco, all these places offer fantastic culture in romantic settings. Some of the most dreamy locations, hotels and spas are in Paris, Seville and Tuscany.

Is the beach and sun not really your thing? Would you prefer snow, woolly jumpers and warm fires?

What about skiing? There are some exquisite hotels in places such as Austria, Canada, Finland/Lapland, France, Italy, Norway and Switzerland, all offer fantastic skiing locations. Not only in the cold winter months but in the summer months too.

There are many romantic hotels that overlook the snowy hills and offer superb meals in front of a glowing open fire. Most of these places allow for more than the excitement of endless days on the slopes, most also offer plenty of shopping and sightseeing.

Many locations are open for skiing all year round. Talk to your travel agent to see which location would offer you all your needs.

Fancy something just as active but not with snow?

Las Vegas offers the casinos, the nightlife and the Hollywood feel. It also offers excursions to the breathtaking Grand Canyon, extravagant stunning shows, fabulous shopping and fancy cars.

Florida offers amazing theme parks, water parks and parades while boasting beautiful beaches.

Both of the above are active holidays with so much to see, but they also offer, fine restaurants, elegant hotels and romance. These locations are excellent for couples who want to experience a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ fun-packed honeymoon.

Look through brochures; listen to others about their journeys away, but remember, what might suit one person, may not suit you both, BRAINSTORM! What are you looking for? You will remember your honeymoon over any other holiday so make it special. Whether you decide to travel far and wide or stay close and cosy, just remember, it’s all about the both of you!
